War of words - Speech may be free, but letters were worth money at Saturday's Scrabble tournament held at Elk Elementary Center in Crede. Sixty-one players from 13 states turned out for the National Scrabble Association-sanctioned contest. It's the third straight year that the association's
West Virginia chapter has hosted a tournament. Twelve rounds of competition culminate today in championship matchups, with winners taking home trophies and cash awards.
The youngest competitor was 11-year-old Hannah Lieberman of Charlotte, N.C., who sported Scrabble jewelry.
Wordsmiths by the dozens matched verbal wits at a National Scrabble Association tournament Saturday at Elk Elementary Center in Crede.
Tournament play continues today, starting at 9 a.m., with an awards ceremony set for 1:30 p.m.
